About the elytra
The elytra is the single most valuable item most players will ever trade. Nothing else in the game replaces it: wings turn a twenty-minute walk into a two-minute flight, and on a server where bases are spread thin that is the difference between playing and commuting. It is usually the first big purchase anyone saves for, which is why demand never really drops.
Where elytras come from
End cities, and only End cities. Each one that generates with a ship has a single pair hanging in an item frame on the deck, guarded by a shulker. There is no crafting recipe and no other drop, so every elytra on the Auction House was flown back from the End by somebody. Supply is entirely a function of how many people are out raiding cities that week.
What moves the price
How picked-over the End is
Cities near the central island get cleared first and never regenerate, so sellers have to travel further out over time. When the nearby End is exhausted, supply thins and the price drifts up until it is worth somebody's while to go further.
Durability and mending
An elytra without mending is a consumable, repaired with phantom membranes until it is not worth it. Listings rarely say which they are, so a low price sometimes means a worn pair — check the listing itself before assuming the cheapest is the best buy.
New players arriving
Elytras are bought far more often than they are sold, and mostly by people who have just got established. A wave of new players raises demand without adding any supply.
