A dedicated in-game account opens the DonutSMP Auction House and searches for it, the same way you would.

The average of the first five comparable listings, and the lowest of them, both worked out per item.
What the two numbers mean
First-5 average
What the item is going for right now. Averaging the five cheapest comparable listings absorbs the one troll listing at ten times the rate, without letting a single underpriced dump set the number either. This is the figure to quote when you are trading with someone.
Lowest per item
The cheapest of those five, and what you would actually pay for the best listing on the page. Worth reading next to the average: close together means a tight market, far apart usually means somebody is dumping.
Both are per item rather than per listing, so a stack of 64 and a single of the same thing compare without any arithmetic. Every check reads the Auction House fresh, so what you get is a snapshot of that moment rather than an index built from history.
What you can check
Anything that trades on the Auction House. The most searched are elytra prices and full netherite gear - ingots, blocks, scrap, swords and armour - along with maces, totems of undying, shulker boxes, end crystals, ancient debris, mob heads, and the plain diamond, emerald, gold and iron blocks most trades get priced against. Rarer items work too, as long as five comparable listings are up.
Knowing the going rate is most of what stops you being underpaid. If you are pricing a trade in in-game money and want to know what that is worth in real terms, the store lists what DonutSMP money costs here, and the reviews are from people who have bought it.

Three items get asked about often enough to have a page of their own, with the check already running and a note on what actually moves the price.

How does the DonutSMP price checker work?+
A dedicated market account opens the in-game Auction House, searches the item you typed, and reads the first five comparable listings on page one. You get the average and the lowest of those five, per item.
Are the prices per item or per stack?+
Per item, always. A stack of 64 listed at 640k is read as 10k each, so a stack and a single of the same item can be compared directly.
Is this live, or price history?+
Live. Every check is a fresh look at the Auction House at that moment. Nothing is cached and no history is kept, so a check during a dump and a check an hour later can legitimately disagree.
Why does a check take a few seconds?+
Because it is a real account opening a real Auction House, not a database lookup. It has to join, search, and read the listings before it can answer.
Does checking a price buy anything?+
No. The market account is read-only. It never bids, buys, or lists, and it never touches your account. There is nothing to log into and nothing to connect.
What does no comparable listings mean?+
Fewer than five matching listings were on the first page, usually because the item is rare or the search was too specific. A broader name, netherite ingot rather than a full enchanted title, normally finds them.
Is the price checker free?+
Yes, and no account is needed. It runs alongside the Dough store, where DonutSMP money is $0.069 per million delivered in-game.
